• great post! points really hit home. I have fallen into the buy what I need now without looking down the road to have to end up spending it all over again. This is something that I am working on!

I have learned that lesson the hard way. I’m a cheapskate at heart, but I’ve discovered that sometimes it is worth paying more for the best product that will meet all your needs and last for years to come.

  • Well said, Mark. Excellent tips for sure. Picking up those extra jobs and tucking the cash away was exactly what I had to do (and I only have one kid).

Thanks, Al! Tucking a little bit away here and there can add up.

Another great post! Great advise especially the spend wisely portion!

      Thanks, Will!

Great points. Like most these days money is very tight, especially with young families. Saving and picking up extra jobs seems to be the way to do things these days. I too am a cheapskate, but have turned to buying one piece of quality gear a year, replacing my cheaper stuff, that way its not done all at once.

I recently discovered your Blog, and I am enjoying it. Good luck in all your preparations for your elk hunt. In 2012 I finished my 2nd elk CO archery elk hunt, I am a cheapskate at heart too, but also a meticulous planner. Keep your family involved it your preparation. I have 3-kids and a non-hunting wife who is very supportive of my hunting endeavors, if I keep her involved.

Thanks for the comment, Jim. My wife doesn’t hunt, but she fully supports my hunting and takes interest in everything that come with it, which is a blessing!

  • Great post as usual Mark! Looking forward to following your journey preparing for this hunt as I prepare for my own.

Great post! Appreciate all the great tips, especially keeping things in perspective. Keep up the great work.

  • Excellent post, It hits home for me, I have the opportunity this September to travel to MT for an Elk hunt. Going in on horses to a base camp and stalking from there. My first one and I have started the preparations, that is how I found your site. I am also lucky enough to have the wife join me, the entire trip was her idea. Lucky!! I will continue to read your post and hone my skills. Thanks…

That’ll be a great trip, Mike! Sharing the experience with your wife will make it even more memorable. Please let me know how your trip goes, and let me know if you have any questions as you’re preparing.
