I’ll warn you up front…this is an off-topic, random post. I don’t have any pretty pictures, any hunting tales, and or any tips or tricks to share today. All I have is some thoughts, which hopefully you will read and reflect upon.
What do you do? Why do you do it?
Do you ever stop to ask yourself these questions? Do you move beyond the surface answer that you may come up with and take the time to think about the deep, core, driving-force behind what you do and why you do it.
You are reading this site, so you probably hunt. Why? Do you hunt because it is fun, challenging, or exciting? Do you hunt to put meat on the table? Do you hunt for a trophy? If so, why does the trophy matter?
Not About Hunting
So, I brought up hunting as an example, but I don’t want to talk about hunting today. The conversation about why we hunt is an interesting one, and discussion about meat hunting vs. trophy hunting is certainly worth having, but that isn’t where I want to land today.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the big picture lately, and I would encourage you to do the same. After all, we are rapidly approaching a New Year, which is a typical time to reflect upon and reset our course in life.
So, what do you do? Me?…Well, I’m all over the map. I’m a husband, a father, a son, a brother, and a friend. I work, I hunt, I run, I write, and I love learning and trying new things.
Why do I do it?
Let’s take this site for example. Why do I have Sole Adventure? And why do I write for other sites and publications? Some would assume that I am trying to make a name for myself, trying to sell something, or just looking for attention. It could also be assumed that I perceive myself to be some sort of expert or authority with information to share. I’ve talked to a lot of people that have thought these things, but none of them are true.
I started writing to document what I was learning and experiencing. A lot has changed since I started Sole Adventure – I mean people actually read my stuff now, I have had opportunities to get “in” the industry a bit, and I get paid to write in other places – but really I’m doing all of this for the same reason that I was doing it on day one.
I’m learning a ton, I’m getting to experience some amazing things, and I’m on a constant quest to grow. I’m writing because I want to capture it, document it, and share it with anyone that is interested.
Oh, and by the way…I have amazing things planned for 2013! Please, stay tuned if you want to learn, grow, and take an adventure with me.
The Big Idea
Okay, so back to the big idea…what we do, and why we do it.
Here is something that I want you to think about – Does what you do define you? Or, is what you do a product of who you are?
Here is what I have come to realize: we place far too much emphasis on what we do, and far too little emphasis on who we are.
Stop asking yourself, “What do I want to do?”
Start asking yourself, “Who do I want to be?”
“We are not here simply to exist. We are here to become.”
